Gratitude For The Simple Things

Gratitude For The Simple Things

In the peaceful moments of stillness, and the quiet seasons of life, my heart delights in reflecting on gratitude for the simple things. So often it becomes easy to find ourselves wrapped up in the busyness of life. Circumstances, distractions and problematic situations has a tendency to fill our souls with unending worry. Then the concerns that overwhelm and trouble our hearts, eventually come to blind us from basking in the beauty of God’s faithfulness and glory that so wonderfully surrounds us.

In this season of my life, the Lord has blessed me with a time of rest. Initially, I despised it. I despised being still and resting. Because I was so accustomed to toxic productivity, always working, always doing, constantly serving, constantly on the go. It was an absolute alien thing for me to find peace in being still. But overtime, something interesting happened. The eyes of my soul became open to see the beauty in the stillness, which led me to find gratitude for the simple things.

It could be something as simple as listening to the beautiful birds singing their heavenly melody throughout the morning. Or it could be something as simple as being thankful for clean water to drink, or a hot cup of cocoa on a cold winters day. It could be our homes, thanking God for the shelter that we dwell in on a stormy night of lighting and thunder. Or even sharing the beautiful, sweet companionship of a loving pet. Too often we overlook the simple things, because our minds are so fixated upon the next thing. Being still has allowed me to see beyond my worries, and into the heavenly glory of God that constantly surrounds us.

I’m thankful for entertainment such as films, music and literature. However, I have recently found myself adoring the quietness and tranquility of nature walks. Allowing the fresh, cool breeze to refresh me. And the pretty flowers and marvellous trees to remind me of God’s majesty. In the quiet, my soul is immersed with serenity. I have learned in this season to take a step back from all the noise, once in a while, to seek rest and gratitude for the simple things. There are so many blessings that God has given to us, such blessings that are often taken for granted that not many people have the privilege of having. A warm shower, a hot dinner to eat, cool water on a blazing summers day, a washing machine to clean our clothing… the list is absolutely endless.

I thank God that He has allowed me to gain a fresh perspective on life during my season of stillness. And I know that this is a time in my life that I will never forget. It has been in the quietness of life, that I have gained a glorious, fresh revelation of His majesty, beauty and glorious love. I hope this piece of writing has blessed you, and encouraged you too, to find gratitude for the simple things.

Lots of love, Devona
