Nurturing Your Inner Beauty
Nurturing your inner beauty is not usually something that the world teaches us to do. Although, it is something that we ought to cultivate. Audrey Hepburn once said, “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” She also said, “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.”
Like many other women, when I was a young girl and growing into my teen years, I was greatly mistaken that beauty is merely potent on the outward appearance. I was captivated by the stunning supermodels that glowed beautifully on the vogue magazines. I had spent my teenage years following various makeup tutorials in order to make myself look and feel more beautiful. However, as I matured I came to realise that though I delight in nurturing my outer appearance, I have often neglected the innermost depths of my soul. Proverbs 31:30 says, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
After moments of prayer and reflection, I came to the realisation that the Lord is the true source and definition of incorruptible beauty. Through which, what better way to blossom within inner beauty, by spending time in His presence and following Him wholeheartedly.
When the fruits of the Spirit overflow within a lady, she glows beautifully with the glorious radiance of the Lord. Her inner beauty isn’t perishable, unlike the outer appearance. For her spirit is cultivated in fruitfulness and heavenly beauty as she commits her heart to the Lord.
Gentleness, Goodness, Kindness, Faithfulness, Love, Long-suffering, Peace, Self-control, Joy.
Such precious pearls within our hearts cause us to be radiant with cherished inner beauty. The Apostle Peter said in 1 Peter 3:3-4, “Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”
To be truthful, it has taken me years to cultivate a gentle and quiet spirit. It is still something that God is working within me every single day. But I love what Peter says, that our beauty is not merely outward, but it is within the heart. A heart that is gentle and quiet. To be tender and serene, is precious in His sight.
My prayer is that the Lord would help us to continue nurturing our inner beauty. And help blossom us beautifully within soul and spirit. That we may shine and illuminate with His love and glory to those who we meet. Remembering that kindness, grace and compassion is much more eternally beautiful, than any amount of adornment could give us.
