How To Hear God’s Voice – Practical Tips
I believe every believer has the ability to hear from God since we have His Holy Spirit within us.
John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
However, many Christians still may struggle with hearing His voice sometimes.
Here I will explain some practical tips on how you can begin to hear His voice clearer in your daily life.
Reasons Why We Cannot Hear God’s Voice Clearly:
- Our minds are filled with thoughts of worry and anxiety so we aren’t quieting our minds to listen out to His Spirit
- We haven’t been reading/studying the Word regularly
- You are not listening
Step One: Quieten Your Mind
Sometimes our minds can be so filled with our own thoughts that we barely hear or listen out for God’s voice speaking to us. Next time that your mind is overwhelmed with thoughts begin to speak God’s Word over yourself. For example, “For God has not given me a spirit of fear, but power love and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
The more you take authority over your mind and thinking habits, the easier it becomes to focus on God which leads you to hearing His voice better.
Step Two: Pause After You Pray
I find that many Christians say a prayer and then immediately go straight into doing something else. But something great I’ve learnt is to actually pause after you pray.
Think of praying as a way of conversation. It must be two sided. Speak to God. Don’t talk AT Him. He wants to communicate with you..
Pause after prayer. He may give you a vision or even just a word. Sometimes He may just be silent and want you to be still in His presence. It’s down to you to develop that communication within your relationship with Him.
Step Three: Read The Bible
Reading the bible more often can cause you to understand more about God’s character and the things that He says. It will cause you to develop something where you get to recognise His voice because it will be in alignment with His Word.
Read/Study the bible daily. The Word is our spiritual food! We can’t go a day without it!
Step Four: Ask
You can also ask God to communicate with you more through dreams and visions if you desire. Ask, believe and you will receive according to His will! God definitely wants to communicate to you but it’s also about Him knowing the best ways He can communicate to you. You never know until you ask.
Step Five: Fast
Fasting heightens our sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. As He leads you, go on a fast! Fasting will cause you to immerse yourself in God’s Word and prayer time. It is a period where you will grow closer to the Lord which will inevitably result in you hearing His voice clearer.
Step Six: Use Discernment
There are various voices you may hear. It can either be yourself (your own thoughts), God or the enemy. This is why it’s important for you to grow in knowledge of God’s Word because the enemy can also be very sly and deceptive sometimes. Grow in discernment as you grow in knowledge of God’s Word, who He is and a relationship with Him. Everything He tells you personally would not go against what the Bible says.
Step Seven: Friendship With The Holy Spirit
In order to recognise someone’s voice, you will need to have a relationship with them.
Become friends with the Holy Spirit! Spend time with Him, tell Him your thoughts and pray without ceasing. It will be much easier to hear His voice clearer when you are already close in relationship with Him.
