How To Grow Closer To God
A few years ago when I became a born again Christian, I had such a hunger for God and I wanted to grow closer to Him and experience Him in the closest way possible! Throughout our journey with Christ, we will always be continually growing in the Lord and blossoming fruitfully in Him. It’s important for us to nurture our spirits and our relationship with God as well as feeding ourselves with the Word.
Here are a few ways that I found have helped me grow closer to God as I have grown in Christ over the last few years.
Spend Time With Him
Firstly, in order to grow closer to someone it would make sense to spend time with them. Just as we have friends and family that we grow closer to by spending time with them, it can be the same with God. It’s imperative for us to be spending time alone with Him.
We all have different schedules so find a time that best suits you to have your daily quiet time with the Lord. In prayer, bible reading and in worship. Ideally it would be good to get into the routine of doing it every single day, because the more you spend time with the Lord, the deeper your bond and relationship will become.
Study The Bible
Another way you can grow closer to God is by studying the bible. Many of us actually come to understand God’s character and voice through the studying of His Word. Through studying the Word, it’s a great way to see how God works, how He speaks as well as His ways. Another great thing about this is that you develop a better understanding of the bible which means that as you grow in the Lord, you will be able to grow in discernment and able to recognise false doctrines elsewhere. This will ensure that you stick close to God and stay firmly faithful to His Word.
Meet Other Christians/Join a Church
I found it extremely helpful by fellowshipping with other Christians and making friends who share the same faith!
When God leads you to Christian friendships it blossoms into some of the most fruitful and wonderful relationships of your life. Like life in general, the Christian journey was never made for one to walk alone. With the right friendships, they can encourage you in the Lord and help you on your walk of faith.
Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Through Christian friendships you grow closer to not only them, but you grow closer to the Lord too. As they encourage you to build your love and faith in Him.
Joining a church is also wonderful, because you have the opportunity to worship God with fellow believers as well as being filled with the Word through sermons. After a long week of working and busyness it’s always satisfying to be able to unwind at church by just praising and worshipping God in the midst of like minded people.
If you aren’t currently attending a church, ask someone you know for recommendations or have a look online as well as giving it to the Lord in prayer. (Remember to ensure that your church preaches on things based on scripture.)
Use Your Gifts
What gifts and talents would you say that you have? God has blessed you with them! I truly believe that we were created for God’s glory (Colossians 1:16). Therefore, find a way to worship Him through your gifts! Do you love to write? Write Him poetry! Do you love to sing? Sing to Him! Or how about dancing, painting, creating… it could be absolutely anything! Find a way to worship Him by doing things that you love.
Prayer walks are a fantastic way to grow closer to God. When you have some spare time, take a walk one day. I love morning walks. Pray about whatever is on your heart and open up to the Lord. It could be about yourself or the things around you.. yield to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to guide you in prayer. This is also a beautiful way for you to become more sensitive to His Spirit.
In all things, put Him first. Matthew 6:33 says ‘Seek first the kingdom of God. And all else will be added unto you.’
God is a good Father who loves you and wants the best for you. As you fix your mind, heart and soul upon Him it will be easier to live the full abundant life He has available for you (John 10:10).
John 15:4 – “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
