Over the past couple of years, I have learnt many lessons regarding our actions and the things we speak. The bible clearly tells us there is power in the words we speak, and the tongue can set the course of one’s life. (Take a look at James 3. Particularly verse 5-6).
There are things that a person can say that can really affect a person’s heart. I’m sure with many of you, at least one point in your childhood time somebody said something to you that really hurt you. It may have even stuck with you till this day that you’re trusting the Lord to mend. But we should be very careful with the things we speak into the lives of others, including ourselves.
In Proverbs 23:7 it mentions
‘As a man thinks in his heart, so is he’
Just as we meditate on the Word of God to build up our spirits, some people may have thought a lot on things people have said to them, which can cause a lot of harm to their hearts. Through which this causes them to think a certain way that isn’t edifying at all. Words towards each other effect people differently, that’s why I always encourage people to think before they speak.
‘Be quick to listen, slow to speak’
Guarding your tongue also includes refraining from gossiping about others, speaking negatively about things and slandering those around you. Speaking on things that goes against Gods ways can begin to corrupt your character and have an effect on others around you.
I have experienced this before and it takes a lot of discipline and surrender to the Lord for Him to really work in your heart and grow you into a better character that He desires for you to be.
An old friend of mine always said to everyone ‘if you don’t have anything positive to say, do not say it at all’. When we are speaking to someone we must always ask ourselves what are our motives, how will this help and encourage to push someone further’?
Always try to see the positives and try to turn around the negatives into a different light!
Speak life into your own life also! Even if you cannot see it, walk by faith and not by sight and ask God to take full control always, that His Holy Spirit may guide you in all you do.
I hope this has blessed you very much, take care xx
